چکیده

A 74-year-old woman underwent myelography with iohexol to exclude a CSF leak. Three days later, her son noticed mild facial asymmetry and took her back to the hospital. Neurologic status was at baseline except for minimal left nasolabial flattening. Initial head CT appeared to show diffuse cerebral edema (figure, A), but the following morning the appearance had normalized (figure, B). Based on the spontaneous clinicoradiologic improvement, we hypothesize that an illusion of cerebral edema was caused by residual iohexol. Although not reported with iohexol, older agents can cause hyperdense gray matter and can accumulate in sulci.

Candesartan Attenuates Ischemic Brain Edema and Protects the Blood–Brain Barrier Integrity from Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Rats

Background: Angiotensin II (Ang II) has an important role on cerebral microcirculation however, its direct roles in terms of ischemic brain edema need to be clarified. This study evaluated the role of central Ang II by using candesartan, as an AT1 receptor blocker, in the brain edema formation and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption caused by ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injuries in rat. Methods...

THE EFFICACY OF DECOMPRESSIVE CRANIECTOMY IN TREATMENT OF PATIENTS WITH MASSIVE HEMISPHERIC CEREBRAL INFARCTION

Massive cerebral infarction is often accompanied by early death, secondary to brain edema and trans-tentorial herniation. Several reports indicate beneficial effects of decompressive craniectomy in this situation, but the efficacy of this procedure is still a matter of debate. A n experimental study in a period of3 years was done on2 3 patients with brain edema due to massive cerebral infa...

Teaching neuroimages: subacute intracerebral hemorrhage mimicking brain tumor.

A 73-year-old man was referred to the outpatient clinic with a 2-week history of headache and apathy. Neurologic examination revealed mild left-sided facial, arm, and leg paresis. Head CT appeared to show a right frontal lobe tumor with finger-like vasogenic edema. Instead, MRI revealed a subacute lobar hemorrhage with perihematomal edema (figure). On follow-up imaging, no underlying cause was ...

Malignant Cerebral Edema following CT Myelogram Using Isovue-M 300 Intrathecal Nonionic Water-Soluble Contrast: A Case Report

Lumbar myelogram utilizing nonionic contrast is a commonly performed procedure to identify spinal pathology. Complication rates are low. Cerebral edema has been shown to occur following intrathecal injection of ionic contrast; however, no current literature has documented this complication relating to the ubiquitously used nonionic contrast medium. We report a case of a patient who developed ma...
